A27 CRASH: Investigators at the scene

The crash has closed the road both ways between the Beddingham Roundabout and the Southerham Roundabout.

The road is likely to be closed until at least 4pm.

A Ford Mondeo was in collision with a refuse truck.

Five fire engines attended and the male driver was cut from the car.

The driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Kings College, London.

The Cuilfail Tunnel has been closed eastbound as a precaution against health risks caused by fumes from stationary traffic.

Long tailbacks have been reported.

The crash happened just before noon.
