The driver of the van suffered shock and was taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester.

Firefighters, paramedics and staff from the Highways Authority assisted at the scene along with the police and the road was closed for nearly three hours to cause traffic congestion into the evening peak time.

An Arundel resident and daily user of the A27 has called for safety improvements at the junction. It mixes traffic from the B2132 with vehicles travelling at up to 70mph along the A27.

Clive Barber, of Tortington Manor, said: "This junction, which allows traffic from the eastbound carriage way to cross the westbound carriage way to access the B2132, is a constant high-risk junction.

"I think radical action has to be taken to resolve this problem by either closing the junction, in spite of the inconvenience to local residents, in an effort to reduce fatalities and injuries.

"There is no doubt that any action will take serious money to resolve but, if it can save just one life, it must be an essential modification to this major trunk road."

Police have asked any witnesses to the accident to call them on 0845 60 70 999, quoting Operation Orlop.
