Amongst the options being considered is a northern bypass.

Members of the public will be asked to give their views on the final options in 2016.

A Highways England statement said: “We are currently reviewing the options for improving the A27. We are working with key stakeholders and those most likely to be impacted by proposals to make sure the options we present provide the best range of solutions for the scheme.

“We will be launching a six week long public consultation on the final options in spring 2016.

There will be a number of public information exhibitions where people will be able to see the route options in full.

Campaigners have called the announcement a ‘token gesture’ in response to anger over a potential northern bypass through Lavant.

Jeremy Dry from Chichester Deserves Better said: “If Highways England thinks it can fob off the people of West Sussex with this it is sorely mistaken.

“We are pleased it has bowed to intense public pressure enough to announce a six-week consultation, but this is merely a token gesture in response to that anger.

“If Highways England doesn’t publish the facts then we will do it for them.

“Our local politicians, who already know the plans, should be standing up to Highways England and making it clear we do not want to see a northern by-pass among the options. “Detailed plans for one already exist and Highways England must come clean about that now and say whether it’s in or out, and if so, why.

“Highways England is accountable to the people of West Sussex and has kept us in the dark long enough while picking and choosing who to let in on the secret. We all want the facts now.”
