Ace exhibition at Littlehampton Museum

IF WIMBLEDON has served up renewed interest in tennis, Littlehampton Museum is the place to be.

The museum, in Church Street, is marking the 100th birthday of the Howard Lawn Tennis Club, which held its first official meeting on March 29, 1911, with a special exhibition.

Lucy Ashby, exhibition officer at the museum, said: “With the assistance of Helen Owen, a member of the club, we have put together a fascinating display looking at the history of the club, which includes archive photographs, programmes and vintage equipment on kind loan from club members.

“Also on show are images from the museum’s own collection, showing the other tennis clubs which have been active in Littlehampton over the past 120 years.”

She added the display, in the Lens Room Gallery, also offered a whistle-stop tour of the history of tennis, looking at the development of kits, racquets and tournaments.

There will also be all manner of slices of tennis trivia dotted around the museum for visitors to enjoy.

“A very interesting exhibition,” says Joyce Bowyer, chairman of Littlehampton Town Council’s community resources committee.

“Congratulations to Howard Lawn on their first 100 years!”

The museum is open 9am-4.30pm, Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays, from 10.30am-4.30pm. Admission is free.
