Action call over 'prison on the cheap'

THE governor and staff at Ford prison are trying to manage the re-settlement jail on a shoestring, the chairman of the prison's Independent Monitoring Board,

Zsa Roggendorff said in her annual report this week.

The board suggested that Ford was often referred to as the cheapest jail in the country.

Mrs Roggendorff said: "We consider there is considerable truth in this deplorable statement and this is not an acceptable situation. The board asks the minister to undertake an urgent review of funding and capital investment as an absolute priority."
