Aiming for slice of apple prize

SHOREHAM Airport was spoilt for choice when it was asked to nominate buildings for a "Best of British" competition.

West Sussex County Council managers decided to suggest suitable candidates, and that led to a list of 22 names.

However, only three could go forward for the Green Apple Civic Pride Awards and, after a ballot, the council has nominated:

Chichester's 900-year-old cathedral;

Shoreham Airport's 1930s Art Deco terminal;

In the submission sent to the judges, the council says of the nomination for Shoreham Airport terminal: "With a unique character of its own,

Shoreham Airport is important in the history of British civil aviation as the oldest established airport in the UK and the embarkation point for the country's first cargo flight. Now a Grade II listed building, many of the features in this exquisite Art Deco building are original, including the Whispering Gallery on the first floor, the main window design above the main entrance and the streamlined "Moderne" interior decoration. The airport is frequently used by film and television companies."

John Haffenden, Shoreham Airport general manager, said: "We are delighted to have been nominated. The terminal is one of the only remaining period buildings of its type at an airport in the UK, and much has been done to keep it in its original state, bearing in the mind the functions it performs."
