Allotments row erupts over £1m sales plan

STORRINGTON residents are furious over plans by the parish council to sell off allotments in Amberley Road to develop the site.

They claim that the parish council has been discussing the issue behind closed doors for more than a year, without giving any inkling of what was being planned.

A letter sent out on June 5 by Storrington and Sullington Parish Council stunned plotholders and nearby residents when it revealed the proposed sale of the site to developers for more than 1m.

The parish council said that for some time it had been unable to meet the demand for allotment plots.

The situation has been made worse by the fact that the Ryecroft Lane allotment site has had to be returned to its owners and there is some doubt about continued use of Ravenscroft where the land is owned by West Sussex County Council.

The parish council intends to buy farmland at Fryern Road to create a new allotment site with toilets and a car park.
