She spoke of concerns about the Conquest Hospital, transport links and her fight to get a fairer deal for local fishermen.

On national issues, students asked about University tuition fees, her work with pressure groups, and her stand on Lansley’s controversial health reforms, which she supports.

She was asked about the cost of rail fares and said that workers ought to be able to liaise with their employers in order to travel at off-peak times.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Mrs Rudd was very pleasant and approachable with our students, who all agreed that her visit was not only very enjoyable, but had helped to crystallise work done for their exam syllabus.”
