Angels will be on Bognor's streets to help revellers

Guardian angels will be arriving on the late-night streets of Bognor Regis to provide help to revellers.

Between 30 and 40 Christian volunteers are set to walk around the town centre between 9pm-3am on Saturdays, working with the police to provide practical help to those who find themselves vulnerable during a night out.

Their role will include responding to people who may have drunk too much, supporting those who are distressed or hurt, or just providing a friendly face to those who need help or advice.

As well as the police, they will also work with door staff, Pubwatch members and the taxi marshals opposite the pier, with the Arun Angels initiative the first of its kind in the area.

The Bognor scheme follows those around the country which have greatly reduced violent crime, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour.

Arun Angels is being funded by the Arun crime and disorder reduction partnership, West Sussex community safety unit and Sussex Police Authority. Butlins will also sponsor the scheme.

The Angels are being set up by Bognor Churches Together. A dedicated charitable trust is being established to run the scheme.
