Anger over plan for second phone mast

AN application for a mobile phone mast in Mayfield just yards from an existing one has angered local councillors.

AN application for a mobile phone mast in Mayfield just yards from an existing one has angered local councillors.

The proposal, from One2One, is for an 11.7 metre pole in Tunbridge Wells Lane. However, an Orange mobile phone mast already exists on the other side of the road.

The applicant claims that technical concerns prevent the existing mast being shared by the two companies. However, parish council members have written to Wealden District Council to say that One2One chiefs should find a way around the problem of mast-sharing.

In the letter to district planners, councillors said: 'We object most strongly to this application.

'This entire application smacks of an indifference to local feelings, does not address any of the aspects and concerns of an environment ... and quite clearly seeks the cheapest possible installation regardless of its impact on, or consequences for, the local community.

Members called on the district council to be more proactive in advising applicants and local councils on mast applications. 'There can be no doubt that the matter is not just one for Mayfield's objections. It has district and county-wide ramifications and action is needed now.'

A district council spokesman said officers were looking into the possibility of mast-sharing before the application is considered in October.
