Angling therapy for kids traumatised by the flood

LEWES man Mike Deacon is organising a fishing experience for children affected by the October floods.

The idea is to help children make friends once more with the environment that traumatised many of them nearly a year ago.

The event takes place at the Pells Lake on September 29, starting 10am.

Said Mike, a graphic designer: I learned to fish at the age of seven and the experience kept me out of mischief, gave me pleasure, and led me to some wonderful places and great times.

So many local children were traumatised by the floods. This event, I hope, will enable them to make friends again with the river - to realise that it is not all bad.

Mike s decision to organise the Tiddles Day was also prompted by a self-expression and leadership programme that he took part in which was organised by Landmark Education.

I had to think up a project and someone suggested a fishing day for flood-affected children, he added.

I learned to fish at the Pells and it is a great place to learn the ropes.

Lewes Town Council gave permission for the event to take place and the Environment Agency is providing rods, lines and bait.

Mike is looking for 20 to 30 children, aged eight to 12, to take part free of charge.

People should telephone the South Downs Council for Voluntary Service on 01273 483832 to book a place.
