Anniversary marked by outstanding Walberton flower show

FROM prize-winning floral art and extra large vegetables to some more unusual entries, Walberton Horticultural Society held its fourth and final show for 2008.

The Autumn Show, which was also a celebration of the society's 40th anniversary, attracted a record number of visitors. With 230 entries, organisers hailed the show a huge success.

"Unusually for the society's shows, every class had at least one entry," said David Campbell, the society secretary.

"Dahlias, being the pre-eminent autumn flower, made a very colourful display in the hall and these were backed up by the other entries in the various flower classes.

"Being September there was a large number of entries in all classes of vegetables and extra tables had to be provided to accommodate all the exhibits, partly because of their size."

Pot plants and floral art sections all attracted exhibits of a high standard in the various classes and were praised by judges.

At the end of the afternoon David Donovan, the president, thanked all those who had helped to make the season a success and chairman Joan Jackson also thanked all those who had worked hard to ensure the day was an outstanding end-of-season show.
