Anniversary year for Felpham and Middleton Horticultural Society

The society’s members are celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The support and standard of their most recent spring show bode well for the rest of the celebrations.

Chairman Rhonda Ball said: “This spring show, the society’s seventh, was considered the most colourful.

“The colours of the daffodils and narcissi were complemented by the floral art exhibits, orchids, camellias, pansies and hellebores in particular.

“In spite of the early spring, it was surprising how many high-quality daffodils and narcissi were still available to be exhibited.

“The warmer temperatures contributed to an increase in entries in other flower classes.”

The number of exhibitors was down on last year but the overall number of entries was unaffected.

A few new adult exhibitors took part. But a new class of trug or basket of goodies grown or made by the exhibitor attracted only seven entries, though they showed a great deal of talent and creativity.

The number of children taking part also dipped and Mrs Ball said the society was anxious to encourage more to enter.

The show at St Mary’s Centre in Grassmere Close saw a steady stream of visitors to look round the exhibits and stalls before it closed with the presentation of trophies by the society’s president, Les Allatt.

The society’s next members’ meeting will be at 7.30pm on April 24 at St Mary’s Centre when Rosemary Legrand will be talking about Captivating Gardens of England. All are welcome and entry is free.
