Hide AdWestfield School has continued to drive forwards since its last successful inspection in 2009. Notable improvements in the last five years include: the quality of teaching, which is good or outstanding throughout the school; good progress in developing leading skills and the pupils’ clear enjoyment of reading; the fact that writing is taught imaginatively and effectively across the school; an increased number of able pupils in Years 5 and 6 are on track to attain high levels in 2014.
The inspection team found that Westfield had developed an exciting, hands-on approach to education and that their pupils achieve high standards through these fun and practical learning experiences. The teaching of mathematics has improved because teachers have a better awareness of how mathematical skills build progressively. Additionally, specialist teaching makes a strong contribution to the pupils’ enjoyment of learning. Ofsted noted that children with special educational needs are well-supported and make good progress.
Ofsted recognised that pupils’ behaviour is exemplary and that their desire to do well is a key feature of the school. They are polite, Welcoming and extremely proud of their school. Pupils in Year 6 are mature, responsible and provide excellent role models for younger children.

Hide AdThe report is also full of praise for the quality of leadership and management within the school, particularly for improving the quality of teaching and not becoming complacent despite their continued success. The inspectors commented that the headteacher’ and deputy are approachable, honest and highly professional, providing excellent role models and strong leadership. Their approach to school leadership sets the tone for how the school involves everyone and its commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all.
The report is also very positive about the role of the governing body which provides excellent levels of support and challenge for the school. It is clear the governors have e clear and accurate view of the school’s performance and how to monitor future improvements.
Inspectors were particularly complementary about the parents’ positive View of the school, with high numbers completing the ‘Parent View’ questionnaire on the Ofsted website. The results of this questionnaire revealed that parents feel that their children receive a good standard of education from caring staff and that they would recommend the school to other parents.
