Anti-landfill group launches a fresh drive for funds

FUNDRAISERS spearheading Bexhill's landfill protest have announced a busy season of events to raise cash for their cause.

And with dinner dances and a new membership scheme to launch, as well as leaflet drops and meetings with councillors, the team at Bexhill Against Landfill and Incineration (BALI) is keeping busy.

"BALI is not relaxing this summer as there are still so many things that are going on in our fight to persuade East Sussex that the Ashdown Brickworks site is a dreadful and potentially devastating site to put yet another landfill in Bexhill," said Nick Hollington, chair of the group.

"In order to ensure we have the funds to continue the campaign, our fundraising group has been tramping the highways and byways of Bexhill delivering leaflets to explain why we need extra funding to step up our campaign.

"Mike Rosner, in charge of the BALI 100 Club, is hoping that yet more money can be raised in this way to ensure BALI has sufficient finance to afford essential legal advice and representation."

The first fundraiser, BALI for a taste of Bali, is an Indonesian-themed night of food, wine and music at Freezeland Farm, Freezeland Lane, on Saturday, September 4, at 7pm for 7.30pm.

Tickets for the night, hosted by Bill and Margaret van Draat, cost 20 per person, for a three-course meal with wine and music.

More details about a dinner dance on Friday, November 26 at Highwoods Golf Course will follow in September, around the same time the organisation launch their new membership scheme.

In October, a key stakeholder meeting in Bexhill Town Hall brings together BALI and East Sussex County Council (ESCC) as well as other stakeholders, to discuss ESCC's waste strategy, which names Ashdown Brickworks, Turkey Road, as the preferred choice for a major new landfill site.

Nick said: "This is a difficult campaign which BALI is in for the duration and which, if the town and district remain united, we believe we can win."

ESCC declined to comment.
