APPEAL: Attack on elderly woman in Worthing

AN elderly woman was knocked unconscious after she and her daughter were struck with a baseball bat during a vicious assault in broad daylight.

Sergeant Ian Kerr from Worthing Police said the women were walking along Goring Road, Worthing, near to the Co-op store, when they got into a "verbal exchange" with two men in a car at around 3.30pm on Monday, June 9.

He said the men got out the vehicle and repeatedly struck the mother, aged 68, with a baseball bat knocking her briefly unconscious.

She suffered bruising to her head and elbows, described as defensive wounds, and her daughter, 44, also received "slight injuries".

Both were taken to Worthing Hospital but neither were thought to have been treated for anything more serious.

Police arrested an 18-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman at the scene.

They were kept in custody overnight but were released on bail on Tuesday, June 10, pending further enquiries.
