An appeal is being made for lifelong loving homes across West Sussex as a large number of children are in need of adoption.

West Sussex County Council is asking for people to come forward who are interested in adopting children of all ages including those with additional needs.

Last year around 40 children were successfully given new families through adoption across the county.

Stephen Hillier, WSCC’s cabinet member for children - start of life, said: “The benefits of adoption for both child and family are immense. We have seen time and time again how a child’s life can be transformed by the love of an adoptive parent and we are asking for more people to give someone a life-changing experience.

“Children needing adoption have often experienced neglect and trauma and will have additional developmental and emotional needs. Giving them a loving home is immensely important. For our part, we will ensure that appropriate support is wrapped around the child and their new family.

“We would urge anyone interested to get in touch regardless of marital status, sexuality or ethnic background.”

Of the children waiting to be adopted in West Sussex, a number also have a range of learning needs and medical conditions including autism and genetic disorders.

There is also a need for people who would consider adopting a child with young siblings.

Emily, a senior adoption social worker with the county council, said: “Adoption gives children the opportunity to experience happy and save family life.

“The one thing that all adopters have in common is their desire to give a child secure, loving and a permanent home which can meet the needs of that child.”

Adoptive parents - through a legal process - take on the full parental responsibility for the child and have the opportunity to make a lifetime of difference to a child.

Support is available for all new adoptive parents to assist them through the assessment process which can take several months or more.

The next information session is taking place at Field Place in Worthing on Tuesday August 9, from 6pm to 9pm.
