Appreciating astounding Aldwick

Astounding Aldwick was appreciated by floral experts.

The two South and South East in Bloom judges spent time assessing the parish's floral attractions.

Their tour ranged from Marine Park Gardens to Rose Green infant and junior schools and from Barrack Lane to Aldwick duck pond. The Rose Green allotments were also included.

Everything was as good as gold in the sunshine as the Aldwick in Bloom volunteers sought to better last year's silver gilt award and category winner status in the competition's urban community section.

Geoff Yates and Maggie Whitaker had the task of judging how Aldwick matches up to the South and South East in Bloom criteria.

Mr Yates said they had been impressed by their visit. "It has been very well organised and a delight to go round and see so many sections of the community involved in such an enthusiastic way," he said.

"They have hit the right spots."

Aldwick in Bloom co-ordinator Delia Jones said she was hopeful of further success.

"The judges seem very pleased with what they have seen. I think they were most impressed with the community aspects of what they have seen.

"Everybody who lives in Aldwick seems to want to improve the area," she said.

The tour ended at the Russell Hotel which provided a free lunch as its contribution to the occasion.

The meal was followed by a separate, more detailed, assessment of Marine Park Gardens which has been entered in the parks section of the event.

Brian Dodd, an Aldwick Parish Council member of Aldwick in Bloom, said: "The gardens are much better than last year. Arun District Council have really put a lot of work into them."

The improvements included a roof garden on top of the pumping station by the fountain.

The judges' visit coincided with the news Rose Green Junior School had reached silver gilt status in the schools' In Bloom contest.

Rose Green Infant School claimed silver status. Both were delighted with their successes.
