ST PANCRAS CHURCH: A meeting was held on June 7 attended by churchgoers and parishioners to discuss the current situation (the church is currently without a churchwarden and a treasurer) and the future of Arlington Church. The principal challenge revolves around the need for volunteers to shoulder activities such as managing the donations and payments, along with the day to day activities associated with looking after an ancient building open every day to the public. Ideas were mooted as to the way forward, especially as the St Pancras Church forms an integral aspect of the secular community and environment as well as a base for the Christian faith, and a suggestion well received was to examine creating a Friends of St Pancras Church Group. ARLINGTON A TEAM: On Wednesday the ‘A’ Team will be holding a meeting starting at 7pm at Primrose Farm. All are welcome.

WHIST DRIVE: On Wednesday there will be a whist drive starting at 7.15pm in Berwick Village Hall. All are welcome.

ARLINGTON ARTS GROUP: On Thursday the Arts Group will be held at the village hall as a regular art session between 7pm and 9pm at Arlington Village Hall. No need to book, bring your own materials and project.

MOBILE LIBRARY: On Friday, June 24, the mobile library will call at Arlington Village Hall at 2.20pm to 2.45pm and at Berwick Village Hall at 2.55pm to 3.10pm.

DICKER DAY: On Sunday June 26, from 1pm to 7pm at the Upper Dicker Village Hall and field. Parking will be on the field. The villagers are welcoming one and all to a day of family fun at the Upper Dicker Village Hall and field like we all remember from our childhood. Classic races, fun and interesting stalls, food and a live band together with a 50’s theme should give everyone a day to remember. Tug o’ War (Ladies versus Gentlemen), a fun scruffy dog show (dogs who look like their owners etc) and a beer tent. Come dressed in 50’s style, bring granny and grandpa, try nettle and thyme cordial cocktails to make the afternoon a splash. Be astounded by the History exhibition with reminiscences of some of our older Villagers and have a bash at the Mums ‘n Dads Egg and Spoon Race. The band will rock your day, the barbecue will tantalise you meat eaters and the vegetarian fare on offer from our 50’s style catering van will astound you along with cream teas and strawberries and cream. Bring your kids so they know what a good old village fete is all about.

ROADWORKS: Between June 27 and 28, road closures may be possible in The Street Arlington due to UK Power Networks connecting a new service.

BERWICK PARISH COUNCIL: The next meeting is the full council meeting on Thursday July 28 at 7.30pm at Berwick Village Hall. The agenda will be attached here nearer the time. Members of the public and the press are cordially invited to attend. http://berwickparishcouncil.org/

CUCKMERE COMMUNITY BUS: Berwick based bus company Cuckmere Community Bus (CCB) has been awarded a grant from Power to Change to replace one of its older vehicles allowing CCB continue providing a reliable service to all its customer in the villages and towns around the Cuckmere Valley Area. The bus is already on order and, once delivered, will receive the CCB standard livery of Green and Cream before joining the fleet and serving it passengers.

Based in Berwick, CCB have around 55 volunteer drivers and 10 additional volunteers who run its fleet of eight low-floor mini buses, providing an important link with shops, doctors’ surgeries and social facilities for those who do not live on a main bus route, as well as operating leisure services through the South Downs National Park. Timetabled bus services are operated seven days a week, 363 days a year, including New Year’s Day and Bank Holidays, but not Christmas Day and Boxing Day. They also operate private hire and special event services. CCB is a busy voluntary organisation and always needs new volunteers. They attend the Hailsham Farmers Market every second Saturday morning of each month, where potential drivers can try driving a bus and talk to an existing volunteer.
