Armed police in Littlehampton raids - five suspects held

FIVE men have been arrested after police raids at two addresses in Littlehampton this morning (April 29) involving armed officers.

Four men, in their late teens/early 20s, were held at a house in Bayford Road, after police received reports of an assault on a man at the house. The reports suggested there could be a weapon inside the property.

At around 9am, just over an hour after the incident began, armed officers raided the house, a search was made and the four men were arrested.

A fifth man was arrested at the same time at another house in nearby St Catherine's Road.

Facial injury

At least three of the men are believed to be from the Littlehampton area, and of British origin.

Police also found the injured man in Bayford Road and he was taken to Worthing Hospital with a facial injury which is not thought to be serious.

Sgt Peter Allan, of Littlehampton police, said no weapon had been found, and he wanted to reassure residents that armed officers were used only to protect other officers involved in the incident.

"It was all over very quickly and the street very quickly returned to quiet normality," he added.

The police helicopter hovered over Littlehampton for about 25 minutes during the operation and more than 20 police and up to 10 police vehicles were in Bayford Road at the height of the incident.

The five men arrested are now being interviewed at police custody centres in Worthing and Chichester.
