Art students get creative with Asbos

Creative students at Bognor Regis Community College have used art to combat anti-social behaviour.

The young people helped to design a leaflet for teenagers to describe the effect that yobbishness can have on communities.

The leaflet will be launched in April for display in schools, police stations and community buildings across the Arun district.

The pupils worked with graphic designer Martin Jones, Arun District Council and West Sussex County Council's youth team.

The project has been funded by Arun's crime and disorder reduction partnership and the anti social behaviour team at the council.

Partnership member Cllr Roger Elkins, Arun's senior councillor for community safety, said the project sought to get young people thinking about what sort of behaviour could be anti-social to others.

"The vast majority of young people in the town do not cause any problems and are just as concerned about the small minority who might cause serious problems as anyone else.

"Many of the reports about anti-social behaviour received by police are simply about groups of teenagers gathering and perhaps being rowdy or intimidating in appearance.

"But these young people often have no idea they are causing a problem and are happy to move on when asked."

Arun's education and promotion officer, Paul White, said youngsters had distinct ideas about how to reach their peer group and establish a better understanding of what was anti social behaviour, its effects and how it could be combated.
