Artist Brenda unveils her amazing painting of Queen after 50 years

As a ten year old, way back in 1953, the Queen’s coronation inspired Brenda to produce this eye-catching painting.

Brenda, who has a studio and gallery at Pound House, recalls: I painted this in 1953, in Whimple, a small village in Devon, where I lived with my family in a tiny thatched cottage.

“When we moved in we had no electricity or running water. I remember Coronation Day vividly, because it was the first time we had seen television.

“Rationing was still in force, and all the mums saved up their points for weeks so we could have sugar and butter for the cakes, as well as wobbly jelly and pink blancmange.

“My Mum made me a pretty white dress with red white and blue ribbon around the hem and waist. “We had a wonderful party in the Victory Hall and afterwards gathered around the eight tiny fuzzy black and white television sets, to watch the queen crowned live from Westminster Abbey. It was a thrill.”

Brenda is still painting today and is well known for her textured mix media work exploring landscape and light in abstract ways.

Her main medium is print, etching and collagraph.

She will be opening her Udimore studio on the two weekends following the Jubilee.

The studio and Oast House Gallery at Pound House, will be open on Saturday and Sunday June 9 and 10 and again on June 15 and 16, from 11am – 5pm.
