Arun moves to quell rumour over Lec site

A magazine article which stated Sainsbury's would definitely be redeveloping the former Lec site in Bognor Regis was wrong, it was stated this week.

Arun District Council has moved to reassure Asda's supporters that both companies' planning applications will receive the same treatment.

The Observer reported last week the concerns of town councillors about an article in the Magazine issued by the Arun business partnership which stated that Sainsbury's plans will be given the go ahead.

A council spokesman said: "The council had no involvement in the concept or content of the article in question.

"And the mistaken assertion in that Sainsbury's development plans will definitely go ahead do not reflect the council's views whatsoever.

"The district council is a responsible planning authority and treats all applications with the same objectivity and plan-led analysis when making a decision.

"Sainsbury's application to develop the site previously occupied by Lec has yet to be determined by either planning officers or members of the council's development control committee.

"As such, the article was incorrect to suggest that the plans were certain to go ahead."

The article was written by the magazine's editor, Steve Cusack, who produces the publication to promote Arun's businesses and business opportunities through the partnership.

The council spokesman pointed out that the proposals by Sainsbury's were only one of several references to development schemes and proposals which represented a mass of good news for local businesses.
