MEMBERS of an Arundel family devastated by the tragic death of their son, aged just 24, are backing an unusual fund-raising campaign in aid of a leading heart charity.

Luke Meekings died suddenly in June, 2008, from a previously undiagnosed heart condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Since then, his parents, Sue and Roger, and other family members and friends have helped to raise funds for the charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), as well as increasing awareness of its work in carrying out work and screening thousands of young people each year.

Now the family is supporting a ‘frightfully’ good drive to bring in even more funds for CRY over the Hallowe’en period.

They have joined up with the McColl’s shop in High Street, Arundel, which has itself teamed up with CRY, the first time the charity has had such a partnership with a retailer.

At its stores across the country, McColl’s will help CRY to reach a wide audience and further increase awareness of its work across the UK.

The Treat Cardiac Risk in the Young Hallowe’en initiative includes a number of spooky in-store promotions especially for children and families stocking up on their trick and treat goodies. Special Hallowe’en packs can be bought, full of recipes, party ideas and fearsome fun for all the family.

There will also be opportunities to donate through collection tins at the tills, via text message or online – it’s hoped that the nationwide campaign will raise more than £100,000 for CRY, which will benefit from the sale of certain products.
