Arundel treasures on TV

THE "jaw-dropping" moment when former Arundel mayor Joe Hayes had the town's ceremonial maces valued by an expert in the Antiques Roadshow will be broadcast on Sunday.

In May, the then mayor Mr Hayes and town clerk Trevor Leggo took several items from the town's collection of treasures in a canvas bag to be valued at the roadshow when it visited Arundel Castle.

The three ceremonial maces and several other items were valued at around 500,000 and Mr Hayes and Mr Leggo returned to the council's offices with a police escort.

Described in the Radio Times as a "jaw-dropping moment" and "the most expensive valuation ever seen on the Roadshow", the programme will be shown on Sunday at 6.45pm on BBC1.
