He was elected at a full meeting of the council last Wednesday (May 22), succeeding Ann Smee, who was given a vote of thanks by councillors and congratulated on a successful year in office, including raising £10,000 for her chosen charities.

Terence, 65, joined the council in 2007, as Conservative member for the East Preston and Kingston ward.

Married for 22 years to Anne, he has five children and was a corporate manager for BT before retiring.

He said: “I am honoured to have been elected as Arun District Council’s chairman. In that role, as well as being a civic ambassador, I am looking forward to meeting members of the Arun community at civic and other events.”

His chairman’s charity will be Homestart-Arun, which supports families with young children across the Arun district, from its base at Arundel.

And the fund-raising got off to a good start, with proceeds of almost £200 from a raffle at the reception following Terence’s election as chairman.
