Auschwitz ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day

A BOGNOR Regis school was honoured to be given the opportunity for pupils to visit Auschwitz.

Emily Jays, 16, and Esme Picton, 17, were chosen for the trip by The Regis School, in Westloats Lane.

Kristine Trickett, head of humanities, said: “Despite being a very emotional trip, it was an incredibly powerful one, which had many key messages. A vital message here was to ensure that we bear witness to what happened and to ensure such a tragedy would never be repeated.

“We were extremely honoured to be given this opportunity, although a very sombre experience it was still difficult to forget that the worst crimes ever committed against humanity were carried out here.”

The girls went to Poland with the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Visiting the camps gave them the chance to discover individual stories of those who lost their lives under the Nazi regime.

Mrs Trickett added: “Walking through the rooms and the grounds of Auschwitz, you are hit by the very scope of the systematic execution conducted by the Nazis. Looking at rooms with shoes, pots and pans and glasses, we could clearly see and identify what they represent, that being lives they had before they entered the death camp.

“We are soon approaching the 71st anniversary, yet it is still as relevant now as it was 30, or 50 years ago. Working so closely with the Holocaust Educational Trust made us realise that it is paramount to keep the messages of the Holocaust alive, and ensure that future generations never forget.”

The 71st anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz will be marked on Wednesday, January 27, Holocaust Memorial Day.
