Award is just reward for service to Wick

David Jones, from Littlehampton, was named the first-ever Chairman’s Community Hero, by chairman of Arun District Council, Dudley Wensley at a ceremony held at the Civic Centre, and Geoff Allen, from Arundel, came in a close second.

In fact, it was so close, that judges agreed to add a runner-up prize at the last minute.

Despite his own disabilities, David’s record of voluntary work takes in organisations including the West Sussex Association for the Disabled, Wick Hall Regeneration Project, Shopmobility, and the Children’s Society, and caring for his severely disabled wife.

He said: “I was thrilled to have been nominated for the award but had not thought at all about winning. This has been a wonderful evening and I am genuinely delighted to have won.” He received £200, an engraved glass trophy and a certificate.

Geoff, who has recently survived lymphatic cancer, helps many in Arundel, in his role as president of the town’s Rotary Club, his committee membership of housing charity the Holmes Foundation, and through his local Scout group.

Dudley said: “Since becoming chairman in May, I have met so many wonderful volunteers across the district who support others with such energy, enthusiasm and determination, and I wanted to highlight their sterling efforts through these awards.”

Twelve finalists received certificates and trophies, including Kim Bangsorensen, Mike de Lara, Bill Goostrey, Emma Holmes-Halson, Barry Leroy-Baker, Freda Packham, Eileen Smart, Mary Taylor, Commander John Torr, Sherry Lorraine and Gez Watson.
