Battle Choral Society

We are well into our rehearsals of the Mass in B minor by J.S. Bach which we last sang in 2004 and which our Director John Langridge has likened to climbing a musical Mount Everest!

The Mass is widely regarded as one of the supreme achievements in classical music and is unusual in that Bach, a Lutheran, set to music the whole of the Latin Mass.

It is divided into 4 parts which were all composed at different times beginning in 1733 and completed in the very last years of Bach’s life, by which time he was blind.

It was never performed in his lifetime but was re-discovered in the 19th century when it was then appreciated by Bach’s successors such as Handel and Beethoven. This monumental work is a wonderful union of Catholic glorification and the Lutheran faith. The choir is proud and pleased that our President, the international soloist LOUISE WINTER, will be singing with us.

She will be joined by Grace Constable, soprano, Gary Marriott, tenor and Michael White, bass.

The performance will be dedicated to Shirley Wild a Vice President of the Society who died earlier this year and the tickets at £15 each will be on sale shortly.
