Battle housing plans withdrawn

The applicant had wanted to build the row of two-storey houses on land behind 56-58 High Street, with vehicular access between Battle Deli and Saffron Gallery.

A number of residents expressed fears this could lead to increased congestion on the High Street.

Alternative vehicle access via the Mount Street car park was branded unsuitable for emergency service vehicles and objectors claimed it could prove a hazard to pedestrians in the car park.

There were concerns the proposed homes would be too close to existing buildings, cutting light to neighbouring properties and overlooking homes in Old Mill Walk.

Trevor Houghton-Berry, secretary of the Old Mill Walk Management Company Ltd, said if the scheme was approved it would “seriously impair the quality of life and well-being of Old Mill Walk residents”.

Others complained the homes would be out-of-keeping with the area.

The plans had already been discussed by Battle Town Council’s planning committee, which lodged its objections with Rother District Council.

The deadline for comments on the proposals would have been today (Friday, March 22).

Rother’s planning committee would then have discussed the plans in depth at a later date and made a decision on whether to grant approval.

The planning application was officially withdrawn for consideration on Tuesday afternoon.
