Battle of Hastings Re-enactment

TEN thousand and sixty-six re-enactors from across Europe turned out for the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings last weekend.

The mighty Norman and Saxon armies faced off once again on the historic battlefield in the shadow of Battle Abbey on Saturday afternoon.

But unfortunately it seems these mighty armies aren’t as hardy as they used to be as Sunday’s re-enactment was called off - because of mud.

An unexpected downpour on Saturday morning left the field waterlogged and after Saturday’s performance the battlefield was deemed just too muddy for battle on Sunday.

English Heritage, which owns Battle Abbey, refunded everyone who had pre-booked a ticket.

The Abbey opened on Sunday, free of charge, as other events including the children’s 1066 skirmish and children’s have-a-go archery went ahead as planned.
