BENN BACKS CHALLENGER

VETERAN left-winger Tony Benn paid a visit to Lewes on Friday in the company of MP John McDonnell who is challenging Gordon Brown for the Labour Party leadership when Tony Blair stands down.

A packed audience of 400 people in Lewes Town Hall heard Mr Benn extol the virtues of Mr McDonnell's political stance.

Lewes Labour Party chairman Richard Black said: 'The meeting gave the general public a chance to get involved in a vital debate at local level.'
