BEST TEACHER: Rob Staggs is “inspirational”

“AN INSPIRATIONAL teacher” – this is how one teacher from English Martyrs Primary School has been described this week.

Year-four teacher, Rob Staggs, has been nominated for the best teacher award in this year’s Community Stars award.

Mum Nikki Davies, of Palmers Way, High Salvington, has seen first hand Mr Staggs’ teaching skills as her son Joshua has been in his class since September.

She said: “Until year four, Joshua never wanted to attend school, didn’t enjoy learning and was reluctant to put in any effort to improve.

“Now, Joshua looks forward to coming to school, he is keen to do well and always tries to do his best.

“He now sees learning as fun – he doesn’t want year four to end.”

Mrs Davies has said one of the key things her son enjoyed was the school trips to places such as the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Cuckmere Haven, and the Science Museum in London.

She said: “The school trips have also been superb learning opportunities for the children and Joshua has looked forward to and enjoyed every one of them.”

Joanna Brown, acting head teacher at the school in Derwent Drive, Goring, said she was not surprised about the nomination, describing Mr Staggs as an “absolute star”.

“We are really, really proud of all our teachers but to have someone nominated for something special like this is a real achievement, particularly for Rob Staggs who is an inspirational and is one of those teachers who genuinely makes a difference,” she said.

Mr Staggs started work at the Goring school three years ago as a newly qualified teacher.

He described the nomination as “very humbling”, adding: “That is why I came into teaching.

“I want to inspire children and I am aware it is not just what goes on in the classroom, it is making them better people.”

However, Mr Staggs said he could not take all the credit, thanking the children for all their hard work.

“I am very lucky to have children who are so willing to learn and be creative.”
