Bexhill FM hits new heights

This has been another "extraordinary week" in the exciting story of Bexhill FM.

The radio station, run almost entirely by the students of Bexhill High School, Bexhill College and St Richards Catholic College has continued to soar.

New students have been introduced to the experience of running a popular radio station and new voices have been heard across the airwaves.

The station's week began with familiar voices but arguably the highlight was the appearance of four of Bexhill High's Year 7 girls who sang live their own creations on Andy Sellers', and new boys, Luke Willard and Sam Culpan's show.

The audience response was immediate...their radio appearance was followed by a request to perform at Bexhill High's charity fete Friday morning, which they happily accepted. Sunday also included a brilliant set by the Eastbourne band, The Veloes, who featured on Sam Webster's hugely popular 'Band Show'.

Other extremely popular 'beat combos' who appeared during the week were Hastings' own 'Inseminate', Tunbridge Wells' 'In Tyler We Trust', local band, 'Houston has a Problem' and finally Bexhill High and St Richard's 'Frequency'.

Richard Harris, the energetic station manager, again featured in the breakfast slot which aired from 7am each weekday morning. His highly impressive show drew plaudits from an ever-widening fan base.

Luke Webster and Fraser Ward caused much merriment both with their 'Guilty Pleasures' and their daily comedy sketches '“ yet another innovation. James Rogers, Emma Brockhurst, Zoe Willis, Matt Bryant, Leah Bryant and Jonny Higgins were more of the established team who performed to rapturous audiences!

A new voice this year was Bexhill College's Oliver Leonard. Oliver is a keen fan of the radio and jumped at the opportunity to host his own shows. New also was Year 10 student Elliot Hayes whose afternoon shows may well become an established feature. Jas Smith, Matthew Rhodes, Will Petty and Aaron Pape also impressed, not only presenting the news and weather shows but also the key 'Teenage Kicks' feature. Amongst their fascinating guests were Bexhill's famous ocean rowers: Matt Hellier and Nick McCorry whose stories amazed the audience.

"This was clearly a vintage year for Bexhill Fm," said teacher in charge, Phil Higgins.

"Bexhill has a radio station of which it can be proud. We will be back next year but we desperately need sponsors to help us meet the running costs. If there are any Bexhillians who would like to have their businesses promoted on Bexhill Fm next year, please contact me at Bexhill High."
