Bexhill school donates uniforms to needy pupils in South West Uganda

St Mary's school and 6th form college in Wrestwood Road Bexhill has donated all of its old uniforms to a school in Africa.

Interim Head of Care at St Mary’s Sarah Sleath organised the shipment of the T-shirts and fleeces to Nyaka Vocational Secondary School (NVSS) in Kanungu District, South Western Uganda.

She said: “The uniforms which had our old logo on were just sitting in storage unable to be used so we wanted them to go to a good cause.”

Sarah has also organised a shipment of old library books to be sent out to Africa.

The students from Uganda wrote: “Webale munonga (thank you very much), because of the generosity of St Mary’s we now have extra clothes to wear other than our school uniform.”

The Nyaka Aids Orphans Project provides placement, tuition, uniforms, and school expenses for all students’ in secondary and high school education.

In addition, it continues to oversee children’s development, including providing counselling and medical care.

Without a secondary and high school education, girls are more likely to marry while young, run away to the city to get a low wage job, or become sex workers.

Boys also end up working in low paid jobs and never escape the cycle of poverty.

An important part of its mission is to ensure that our students go to secondary and high school. The charity says a strong education offers one of the greatest hopes for students in Uganda to begin envisioning a life beyond the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
