Bid for freedom comes unstuck

Afternoon traffic was brought to a standstill in Plumpton Lane, Plumpton, when a herd of calves escaped from their field and out on to the road.

Most were rounded up but five found their way into a copse and got stuck in deep mud in a small pond.

Firefighters from Barcombe were quickly on the scene in time to see the smallest calf climb out over the backs of the others.

After clearing a path to the pond, the rescue team was eventually able to coax, pull and push the remaining calves to freedom, evidently none the worse for their experience.

Three fire engines, an animal rescue appliance and support vehicles attended.

Some of the team had to join the calves in the mud in their rescue efforts.
