Big birthday card for the big day for Edward Bryant Primary School

Former heads and pupils have wished a Bognor Regis school a happy birthday.

They are among the dozens of individuals who signed a giant 40th birthday card for Edward Bryant Primary School.

The metre-long card, in the school's colours of red and black, was made by current head Cathy Williams.

Those who have left their signatures include Wilf Archer, the school's head between 1968 and 1973.

He wrote: "Congratulations on 40 years of teaching and learning."

A signature with more recent connections came from Carmen Humphrey-Evans who was at the school between 2001 and last year.

Mr Archer was joined by fellow former head Mervin Batty for a tour around the London Road premises on a celebration open day last Thursday. Several former pupils also took the chance to remember their schooldays.

Mrs Williams, who took over in January 1990, said: "There have been only four headteachers since the school opened.

"I think that's part of the reason why it has been so successful because it has been a stable environment. People have come here and loved it and stayed rather than moving on after a few years."

The celebrations also included the current 415 pupils in 15 classes. They each enjoyed a piece of the 30 birthday cakes, decorated with the school's crest, bought by Mrs Williams.

The opening of the school was recognised as well in a week of lessons about the 1960s.

Staff joined in the spirit of the occasion. Many wore fancy dress from that decade.
