Two brothers and a sister from the local Fellows family have all reached the golden milestone of 50 years of marriage.

Cynthia and Robert Earl became the latest of the three couples to mark the occasion when they held a celebration at the Brickwall Hotel at Sedlescombe.

Cynthia’s two older brothers had already reached the landmark.

One of the brothers, Dennis Fellows, from Robertsbridge, said, in his speech, at the celebration, that he believed it was a unique occurrence and referred to an important family event which took place less than a mile away from Sedlescombe.

Dennis said: “In 1917, at the age of 17, our father Arthur Fellows decided to enlist to serve in the First World War.

“He rode on horse-back all the way to Shoreham, then on to Folkestone in order to join-up.

“Our father was injured at the Battle of the Somme and spent 58 days in hospital before returning home to his father at Tolgate Farm.

“Arthur met his future wife Catherine when he stopped his horse and cart at Ebdens Hill and offered to take her and her case on to Hastings.

They were married in May 1928 and I, my brother David, and sister Cynthia were born .

“All three of us learned a great deal from our loving and hard working parents and this is something we have passed on to our children.”

Commenting on the latest Golden Wedding celebration, Dennis said: “It was very nice that so many friends and relatives were able to gather together. Robert gave an amusing explanation of how he met Cynthia.

“We enjoyed an excellent buffet lunch and were able to catch up on the latest news.”
