Birthday boy Bob celebrates special day with record quiz

IT WAS a double cause for celebration at Worthing mayor Bob Smytherman’s birthday quiz last week as a record amount was raised for his mayoral charities.

The event, held at Palatine Park Clubhouse, in Palatine Road, Worthing, last Wednesday, raised more than £1,100 for the mayor’s charities – Guild Care, Worthing Mind and Worthing Alzheimer’s.

Chairman of the mayor’s charity committee Percy Nowell said the total was the most ever raised from the event.

He said: “It was an absolutely fantastic event, with a terrific atmosphere on the night.

“We had sold out a week before the quiz and had a few people turn up on the night without booking. We managed to squeeze them in, and it was the best mayor’s quiz we have done.”

In celebration of Cllr Smytherman’s birthday, he was presented with a personalised cake and was surprised by a photo montage of his six months in office.

The quiz was compiled and presented by radio dj Simon Osborne and Dave Hunt.

Mr Nowell said: “I can’t say for sure why it was so successful but Simon and Dave are always a big draw, while Bob has a lot of charisma.

“Bob really enjoyed seeing all the pictures of his first six months in office.”

Fundraising manager at Guild Care Rachel Duke said the charity was delighted with the sum raised.

She said: “To raise over £1,000 was amazing. It was fantastic to see so many teams come out in support of Bob’s charities and it was a great night.

“I particularly enjoyed seeing the pictures of Bob from his time as mayor, and it is great that he gets stuck in for a good cause.”

In a short speech on the night, Mr Smytherman thanked the clubhouse’s owners for hosting the event, and those who turned up to take part in the quiz.
