Birthday party held to celebrate 100 years of scouting in Bognor

A party to celebrate 100 years of Scouting in Bognor Regis was held by the 11th Bognor Scout Group.

The 11th Bognor was formed in 1972 as an amalgamation of the 10th Bognor, founded in 1946, and the 1st Bognor St John, which dates back to 1909.

The gathering was held at West Meads Hall and a group of more than 50 people enjoyed an exhibition showing the history of the group, children's games and a big cake.

Leaders from the 1950s and 1960s brought old photographs, uniforms and other memorabilia for the display.

It included information on the founding of the first group from the June 1909 edition of the Church of St John parish magazine.

There were also pictures of scouting activities '“ including camping and St George's Day parades '“ and displays on the best-known leaders.

The Rev Langdon founded the original group, for boys aged ten to 15, to train them in scout work.

He said at the time: "There is just enough military drill to enable them to march in an orderly manner and enough physical training to fit them for their activities.

"If the members can show the sticking power in proportion to their present keenness the patrol ought to fulfil the hopes of those who brought it into being."

Nowadays there is not much military drill - but there are badges for using computers, looking after the environment and sport, to name a few.

The age range has widened to include Beavers (aged six to eight), Cubs (eight to ten-and-a-half), Scouts (ten-and-a-half to 14) and Explorers (14-18). Girls are now welcome, too.
