Blooming great result for the budding florists

Floristry students at Chichester College have been showcasing their talents at this year's South of England Autumn Fair.

The five students, who are currently studying a level 2 floristry diploma at Brinsbury – the countryside campus of Chichester College, entered pieces into the show’s flower arranging competition which had a ‘Autumn Glory theme’.

The group have only been on the course since September and had just one week to design and produce their entries – not that it showed as they claimed the top three spots in the beginners’ category.

Athene Maher produced the winning entry, with Emily Allen and Kevin Rix in second and third place respectively. Athene said: “Although I was completely stressed about making the design, when I realised I had won I felt fantastic! I’ll definitely be doing it again!”

Chelsie Hewitt’s piece was highly recommended, while Esme Riley was pleased to be able to experience the competition and learn new skills.

Karla Bell, floristry lecturer at Brinsbury, added: “I’m hugely proud of all of them, it is a fantastic achievement. The entry requirements for the beginners’ category specified entrants should have less than two years’ experience – these guys had a lot less than that!”

The florists weren’t the only students celebrating wins at the show, which took place at Ardingly last weekend (1 & 2 October).

Awards were given to winners of the South of England Agricultural Society Student Assignment competition – with Brinsbury taking first place in one of the categories.

Kaine Marshall, who is studying skills for work, won the level one competition after for his project on The Brown Hare, which judges described as well planned, well presented and informative.

And equine student Rhiannon Angleson took second place in the level two competition to complete a fruitful weekend for Brinsbury.

“To see Kaine’s and Rhiannon’s assignments win awards is brilliant and I’m delighted for our floristry students who really rose to the challenge of producing spectacular pieces in such a short space of time.”
