Blooming marvellous club flower show at village hall

The sun shone at the Thakeham Gardeners Club flower show, held on Saturday, July 16, and entries were up on the previous year.

The village hall was overflowing with flowers, plants, vegetables, cookery and preserves, art, photographs and handicrafts. Each member is supplied with a small plant by sponsor Village Nurseries earlier in the year and they then grow it and enter the class. Jean East won the Brian Ely Cup for her sweet peas, the Peter Turk Cup for penstemon, the A G Linfield Cup for most first prizes and the Tom Daly Cup for the best floral arrangement, which featured a central sunflower.

Hilary Alce won the Thakeham Cup for gaining the most points in fruit and vegetable classes and the Community Cup for the best pot grown fuchsia. There is also a Booby prize for the worst fuchsia and this was easily won by Philippa Smith who managed to kill it almost as soon as it was in her possession. Pat Snape was awarded the Margaret Denyer Cup for combined cookery classes, a Voucher from Waitrose and also the County Pastimes Cup for the best handicraft exhibit with a yellow sugarcraft rose. A voucher from Spring Gardens was awarded to Gil Quince for her tomatoes, from Flowerwise to Peter Westrip for his potted orchid sporting 40 blooms, and from the Village Florist to Maureen Sherwood and Elizabeth Hustings jointly for their floral arrangements depicting ‘Treasure Trove’.

Other members awared prizes were Doreen Thompson, Rita Benton, Patricia Wilks, Sandra Jenkins, Janet Greenhill, Nancy Stanisford and Graham Darlington.

A successful male member was Don Sherwood who won the June and Ernest Wright Cup for the best rose and also the Dorothy Brown Trophy for outstanding excellence in flower and pot plant classes.

This year we had 2 new cups by Thakeham Mushrooms. Anita Darlington won the Thakeham Mushroom Cup aswell as the Jubilee Cup for most points in handicraft classes.

The Club is growing due to its friendly nature and excellent monthly speakers. It meets on the second Monday in the month at 7.30 pm in the village hall or for further information contact Jean East on 01903 745846.
