'˜Boat' race around Catsfield triangle to mark 1066 anniversary

Catsfield Boat Race will see teams of four run around the 1066-metre-long course following the ‘triangle’ in the centre of the village – Church Lane, Church Road, The Green – on Sunday, September 18.

Chairman and founder Scott Lavocah came up with the idea to mark the anniversary of the battle and to give Catsfield its own thing.

“With the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings fast approaching, a small group of villagers thought Catsfield would benefit from a street event to raise money for village causes,” he said.

“Ninfield has their pram race and carnival, Battle has multiple events, so why not Catsfield?

“It’s hoped this event will become an annual feature.”

This year’s race is 1066-themed with the boats supposed to be Norman longboats, but future races may have different themes.

Rother District Council awarded the organisers £500 to help pay for the road closure, which has been secured, as part of its 1066 anniversary grants scheme.

A full day of enjoyment has been organised, with the races starting in late morning where the three roads will be closed for two hours from 11am to 1pm.

After the races, there will be food and refreshments in the playing fields, along with children’s races, music, axe throwing, archery, a water balloon fight and more.

“All are welcome to come and shout and support the teams around the triangle,” Scott said.

There are still places left to enter a team – entrants must comprise of four people, with a minimum age of 10-years-old, but there must be at least one adult in the team, and entry costs £10 per person.
