Bognor beaches could see return of Blue Flag

A badge of honour should be heading back to Bognor Regis beach in 2009.

The stretch of promenade between the pier and Butlins is likely to regain the prestigious Blue Flag.

This is the highest award in Europe for top-quality beaches.

Hopes are high the flag will once again be flying above the seafront this summer.

Arun District Council has applied to the award's organiser, Encams, for the right to hoist the flag once more.

This comes after the seawater met the necessary standards for its level of cleanliness during last summer.

The promenade was also believed to have reached the required level for its facilities.

Cllr Norman Dingemans, who looks after economic and cultural development for the council, said: "We are hoping the judges will be satisfied with all elements of our application.

"Water quality is not the only component. Other criteria include safety, overall cleanliness and the provision of environmental education information.

"But we are hopeful we will see the Blue Flag return to Bognor's beautiful beaches in the summer of 2009."

Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce chairman and president Nick Stuart Nicolson said: "I welcome the prospect of Bognor becoming a Blue Flag beach again.

"Being acknowledged as meeting the highest European standards for our seafront can only do our town good.

"It raises our profile, which attracts visitors and adds to the trade of our shops and businesses."

Bognor missed out on a Blue Flag in 2008 after too many sea-water samples were found to be dirty.

This was said at the time to be caused by a rash of summer storms which led to dirty water from kerbs and streets flowing out into the sea.

Before that, Bognor had gained the Blue Flag every year since 2001.

The Blue Flag recognises clean and safe stretches of coastline that promote environmental education and offer excellent visitor facilities.

The criteria to qualify for the flag includes the provision of first-aid facilities, clean toilets, recycling facilities and access for disabled visitors.
