Bognor Regis residents get back to nature and grow own vegetables

Residents of a Bognor Regis housing charity are growing their own meals.

The cultivation of vegetables on the plot of land by the individuals living with Bognor Housing Trust was one of the highlights given by manager Laura Kattaun in her latest half-yearly report.

She also said links were being made with local voluntary and statutory services to the benefit of those who lived in the trust's 22 rooms in three properties around the town centre.

She reported more than 25 per cent of residents were in full-time work and another 25 per cent were doing voluntary work including Shopmobility, the town council and the Regis Centre.

A further 25 per cent were involved in some form of training, including literacy and numeracy, as well as IT skills.

"So, almost 80 per cent of the residents are engaged in activities enabling them to return to normal life, back in the community," she stated.

The trust now has a one-bedroom flat with kitchen, bathroom and lounge which can be let to a resident who is believed to have made enough progress to enable him or her to move on.

During the six-month tenancy there, some of the rent is put aside by the trust to give the individual a deposit to enable them to go into the community to rent a property.

Stan Nattrass, of the trust, said: "I know I speak for chairman Eddie Lever '“ who is in hospital '“ when I say the work done by the trust does Bognor proud.

"I thank the staff for their devotion to work which is not always easy, and to the trustees for their support and interest, and our treasurer, Ray Kaveney, for all his work on behalf of the trust."

The trust has 12 trustees, of whom six are Quakers, and the other six are from a wide variety of other churches and professions.
