Bognor residents expect tougher action over poor parking

Tougher action is needed by the police to tackle problem parking around Bognor Regis, a senior officer has been told.

Mike Coleman said the residents he represented around Pagham and Rose Green expected the law to be enforced.

He said he was getting frustrated that, while police community support officers did a good job, there seemed to be a reluctance to get tough on offenders.

"What I would ask for is that we work together and identify those problems on behalf of my residents," he told Inspector Sharon Parker at the latest meeting of the Joint Western Arun Area Committee of parish, district and county councillors.

"They include misuse of parking areas, parking in the wrong places and parking in places like Aldwick Road which blocks people's houses.

"Our mailbags are full of issues like this. People are raising them with us and we really need the police to respond to us.

"What I am asking for is some enforcement. The county council can do its bit, by painting double yellow lines, but we need the police to do their stuff as well.

"People are not contacting the police because they are not getting any backing. They are contacting us instead.

"I'm chairman of the highways and transport sub-group and I will keep this matter at the top of our list. I will raise it every time we have a meeting."

Trevor Bence, one of the district councillors for Bognor Pevensey, spoke of 37 parking and traffic offences he had seen around Aldwick Road in a two-hour spell.

He claimed to have seen the police ignoring the instances. "The problems are that obvious, they are painful," he stated.

"None of these offences are being enforced. We can see that everywhere we look."

Inspector Parker said the arrival of extra police officers would

enable more action to be taken against illegal parking.

"Police officers are able to take enforcement in those cases while police community support officers are not able to," she explained.

"Now we have more police officers we will have more people available to deal with these issues in the area.

"The additional PCs will make a difference. They can deal with speeding drivers and careless and uncontrolled driving.

"But I can't say my staff will be dealing with parking issues every day. They will not have time to do that because they will have other duties they will want to do."
