Bognor still looked blooming lovely '“ despite the weather

The town's flowers might have suffered a battering in the summer storms.

But the amount of horticultural pride on show during the visit of the South and South East in Bloom judges still did the town proud.

Robin Potter, from Pagham, spent two-and-a-half hours on a tour with fellow assessor Geoff Yates from Milford, accompanied by Arun District Council officers.

He said: "We had a very good tour. It's just a shame it has been so windy which has burnt quite a few of the flowers.

"However, we have been very impressed with what we have seen. We have been particularly interested in the new work in Hotham Park."

Mr Potter and Mr Yates also had the chance to speak to some of the individuals who have made Bognor flower this summer.

Their tour began and finished at the new-look Hotham Park. In between, they visited South Bersted CoE Primary School where they were interested in seeing the work which had earned it eco-school status.

They also looked around Waterloo Square, along the seafront and the two allotments in Sandringham Way which are being cultivated by Bognor Regis Community College students.

Town councillor Jason Passingham, the Bognor in Bloom working party chairman, said he was hopeful the silver award from the 2007 In Bloom competition would be bettered.

"There has been a lot of effort put in by everyone this year. There is so much lovely community spirit involved. It has been really good."

This was shown by the increase in entries to the Bognor in Bloom contest to a record number of about 40, he added.
