Bognor students in maths exercise at races

STUDENTS from Bognor Regis Community College spent the day at Fontwell Park races on Thursday to look at how maths is used outside the classroom.

The event was organised by West Sussex County Council's Education Business Partnership with help from the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust and jump jockey Ollie McPhail.

The Year 10 pupils spent the day taking part in various activities aimed at raising their awareness of how maths is used in the world of work, while also highlighting that maths can be fun.

Activities included a guided tour of the weighing room and maths-based activities where students had the opportunity to dress up in racing silks and compare weights and measures through looking at the handicap system and how this can affect the outcome of a race.

Students then had the chance to measure the parade ring and work out how many horses could fit into the space available.
