Bognor’s Maggie says goodbye after 40-year career

Maggie has closed the door of Head Start for the last time after 23 years and creating thousands of attractive heads of hair.

Her lease on the premises expired and she is due to have two operations on a shoulder damaged after she fell over in the street.

She intends to carry on, after a lengthy recovery.

Maggie hopes to become a volunteer hairstylist to help people unable to get out because they are ill.

But she said she was still sad to end her career of the past 40 years.

“I’m sorry to leave. “I love hairdressing and I love the people,” she said.

“I love making people look lovely. I’ve meet some really nice people over the years and they have been so kind to me.

“You can never please everyone but I have always done my best.

“I will miss everyone,” added Maggie.

Maggie, who lives in Middleton, was born in Waterloo in London.

She first worked at the BBC for a year making wigs for its actors.

Then she moved on to Sloane Square in Chelsea and gained qualifications in her chosen career before her dad bought her a salon when she was in her mid-20s.

Head Start is the fourth business which she has run.

She has lately worked part-time there as her final day approached.

One of Maggie’s customers for the past ten years who was sad to see her go was Jackie Collins.

“She is such a lovely person and so popular,” said Jackie.

“People call in just to chat to her.”

New owners took on the salon the day after Maggie’s departure to ensure it continued to trade.
