Bognor's Picturedrome is saved

Readers of the Bognor Regis Observer have helped to save the Picturedrome.

Town councillors have agreed to buy the building after total support for the cinema was given by those who have contacted the paper to tell town councillors their views.

Their comments were noted by town councillor Paul Wells in the debate before the council's historic vote.

Here is a selection from the 100 per cent backing:

Clive Paul, of Thorndene Avenue: "This cinema is such good value and has been updated and shows a good cross-section

of films.

"In my opinion, it is a real asset to a town that has very little to offer. We are unique in having such a great facility. It should be retained!"

Alice Treharne, of Whitfield Close: "It's a really beautiful old building, with such atmosphere and my husband and I feel very cosy and comfortable, and the seats are great too.

"We would be very upset if this lovely historic building were to be demolished... Lots of our friends in our age group (60-70) go there too. I am sure I speak for them when I say please don't shut it down."

Sarah Foster, of Collyer Avenue: "I think we should without question buy the cinema and keep it, providing our children with affordable entertainment."

Tessa Burrington, of Norfolk Square: "I think it is vitally important the Picturedrome remain as a cinema. It is part of the history and very important to the town. All that can be done must be done to save it."

Sarah Jarvis, of Newtown Avenue: "Yes, of course, the public still want the cinema to remain open. Why should we have to

go all the way to Chichester to see a film?

"It is part of our history and a very much-loved and used cinema. It should remain as it is with all it's charm for future generations to experience."

Jennie Cooper, of Clyde Road, Felpham: "I feel very strongly about this. If we were to lose our cinema, it would be devastating for the local families who, in most part, cannot afford to take their children to Chichester Cineworld."

Pauline Williams, of London Road: "Of course, we should save our cinema. Please, please save our cinema. It is a building full of character and the staff are kind and friendly."

Readers used the paper's website and email address to voice their unanimous backing for the historic entertainment venue.

The Observer passed on all the comments received, with names and addresses, to town councillors before the meeting.

A total of 54 responses had been received by the paper.

Every one of them urged the town council to spend public money to ensure the historic building in the town centre continued to show the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
